Eyes of Time, Brooklyn Museum reviewed in Art Papers

One has to seek out, or accidentally stumble upon, Chitra Ganesh: Eyes of Time, installed at the Brooklyn Museum December 12. 2O14-July 12. 2015. on a wall al the back of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center tor Feminist Art. In general, smaller-scale exhibitions are a familiar problem for those who frequent the museum, an issue that is somehow compounded each time an artist whose work is articulated through a non-Western vernacular is on display. Like all recent installations in this particular space, Ganesh was invited to produce an installation in conversation with Judy Chicago’s still trending The Dinner Party(l974-1979). a work that sought, in summary. to bring a symbolic consor lium of historical female figures to one table, and which remains the anchor of the Sackler Center.

Ganesh has produced an immersive installation-a mural accompanied by vitrines-which features Kali, the Hindu goddess of change. time, destruction, and regeneration as one of the 39 figures originally invited to The Dinner Party. Though Ganesh's work often deals with mythological themes, here she directly explores a particularly significant mythological figure by portraying Kali three times over: as past. present, and future.
